These paintings are of surfaces weathered by time. These may include walls, fences and doors, notice boards, even gold leaf peeling from a statue of Buddha. Each painting consists of several layers of paint, collage, printing and marks made with pencils and Posca Pens. In some layers I add marks, in others I take elements away by scratching into paint, sanding or tearing off collage. In this way, my process mirrors how wind and rain act on the surfaces.

Some of my paintings are purely abstract, springing from the bank of images imprinted in my mind on walks through towns and forests. Others are loosely inspired by details from photos in my huge personal collection. I enjoy giving a painting the name of the place where I found the image that sparked the idea for that painting.
